Rainbow Beach

The coloured sands are along the bay behind this rock
Before and after Fraser Island, I stayed in Rainbow Beach, a small beach town.
It's called that way because of its coloured sands.
According to a sign in town the legend goes as follows: It is said that back in dream-time there lived a beautiful maiden named Murrawar. She fell in love with the rainbow because he would come to visit her every day in the sky.
One day a man named Burwilla from another tribe came and stole Murrawar and used her as his slave wife, treating her badly. He was the owner of a huge killing boomerang that was full of evil spirits.
One day Murrawar ran away, along the beach and Burwilla took his boomerang and followed her to kill her. When she called for help, her beloved rainbow raced towards her. The evil boomerang attacked the brave rainbow and when both met, the boomerang got instantly killed and the rainbow shattered into thousands of small pieces. Dying on the beach, the rainbow is still there in Rainbow Beach, forming the colourful and beautiful hills along the beach.

So on my last day there, I went to check out the coloured sands at sundown. However I think I would have seen more of the colours in the morning as they face east. But the sand dunes also have a nice view on the sunset.

A sand angel
Also, some young people were having fun trying to go down on the sandhill on these small boards and I also found some sand angels!
